Gear Materials & Heat Treatment in an RFQ

Material and heat treatment are part of the component specification, not optional finishing notes. A clear RFQ describes the required final condition and lets the manufacturing review connect it to machining, tooth production and inspection.

Gear Materials & Heat Treatment in an RFQ

Specify a material, not just “steel”

Provide the grade and relevant material standard. If substitutions are permitted, define the approval process instead of assuming that a similar name means equivalent chemistry and performance. If the material is not yet selected, identify the operating requirements and make the open decision visible.

Distinguish the treatment routes

Through hardening, carburizing and induction hardening can create different distributions of hardness. The choice depends on the approved design and material. Do not replace a treatment requirement with a generic phrase such as “wear resistant”; it does not tell production which final condition is required.

State hardness and depth requirements clearly

Where the drawing specifies surface or core hardness, include the location and the measurement basis. Case-depth requirements should identify the relevant definition and evaluation location. If only particular zones are treated, show those zones and any masking or exclusion areas on the drawing.

Allow for movement during treatment

Heat treatment can change dimensions and alignment. A gear shaft, thin ring and compact gear wheel may need different workholding and finishing plans. The drawing’s final dimensions should therefore be reviewed with the treatment sequence and the allowance available for subsequent machining or grinding.

Define the final tooth and surface condition

If teeth must be ground after hardening, specify that requirement and the final gear acceptance limits. Also identify critical bores, journals or faces that require finishing after treatment. A treated blank supplied for finishing needs a clearly described incoming condition.

Agree the evidence before production

Identify the material certificate, hardness record, treatment record or other evidence required for the project. Sampling and report scope should be part of the quotation. List the required tests and reports so the supplier can quote the correct inspection scope.
