Gear Cutting vs Grinding: What to Specify

Tooth cutting and tooth grinding serve different stages of a manufacturing route. A useful specification defines the finished gear and its acceptance requirements, then makes clear which processing conditions are mandatory.

Gear Cutting vs Grinding: What to Specify

Start with the finished component

The drawing should establish final tooth geometry, material condition and mounting interfaces. A process name does not replace these requirements. A supplier needs to know which tooth and dimensional characteristics are controlled and how the finished part will be accepted.

What gear cutting establishes

Applicable cutting processes generate the tooth form from the blank. Hobbing is commonly associated with external gears; power skiving can be relevant to suitable internal and external geometry. Tool clearance, shoulders, tooth form and the material state influence which process can be used.

What gear grinding adds

Grinding is a finishing operation that removes controlled stock from the tooth flanks. It may form part of a route after hardening where the drawing requires that final condition. The grinding route needs suitable allowance, workholding and access to the features being finished.

Connect the operations around heat treatment

Cutting, treatment and hard finishing are not independent quotation lines when one operation affects the next. Movement during treatment and the available finishing stock can influence whether the final geometry is achievable. Identify any supplied-blank condition and which operations are included in the inquiry.

Keep tooth and mounting datums aligned

A gear can meet a tooth measurement while still having an interface relationship that does not suit the assembly. The locating scheme used in finishing and inspection should follow the component’s controlled datum requirements. This is especially important for integrated shafts and mounted rings.

Compare quotations on the same basis

Specify cut or ground final teeth where the design requires it, and include the accuracy standard and report scope. Compare material, treatment, finishing and inspection together. The lower-cost route is not automatically equivalent if the final condition differs.
